Master the economic theory you need to analyse key issues in the energy industry.

This online course will give you an in-depth understanding of the microeconomic modelling techniques used by economists, and their application in the energy sector.

The course is part of our Energy Economics and Finance programme, four online short courses that combine to give you the fundamental economic skills you need for a successful career in the energy industry or government organisations.

Complete all four and, subject to satisfactory performance, you’ll have the opportunity to progress to our on-campus Masters in Petroleum, Energy Economics and Finance.

What will I study?

This course will cover the main elements of Microeconomic Theory, focusing on how they apply to the energy sector. Among other topics, the course includes:

  • consumer theory – examining how consumers make choices and form energy demand
  • how uncertainty in energy markets can affect decisions
  • analysis of producer behaviour in energy markets
  • demand- and supply-side interaction in the energy sector
  • strategic intersection of energy suppliers
  • analysis of cartels.

By the end of this course, you will…

  • Understand the underlying factors determining energy supply.
  • Understand the underlying factors determining energy demand.
  • Be able to analyse energy market outcomes.
  • Be equipped to study the strategic interaction between energy producers.

How will I study?

Economic Analysis for Energy Markets is delivered entirely online. You can study with us anywhere in the world and manage your study hours to suit you.

The course takes the form of an online digital workbook. You can work through it at your own pace. Your teaching is delivered at Masters level by academic experts and our energy industry partners.

Your tutors are all members of the Aberdeen Centre for Research in Energy Economics and Finance. Together, they hold over a century’s experience in the field, in teaching, research, and advising the energy industry and national governments.

Your course is delivered through MyAberdeen, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Also available as an app, you can access your learning materials on computer, smartphone and mobile device 24/7.

Your course features a range of resources, including:

  • videos
  • interactive learning materials
  • free, fully integrated textbook, available electronically
  • the online resources of our award-winning Sir Duncan Rice Library
  • online forums
  • webinars.

Study hours

This is an always-on course. Your learning materials are available online, 24/7, all year round. This means you can dip in and study when it suits you, setting your own pace.

You’re free to set your own study hours, and you have up to 18 months to complete the course.

The course will take approximately 150 hours to complete.

As a guide, that’s around 10-15 hours per week of study time over 12 weeks.


You’ll be assessed entirely online via a self-assessed digital workbook. It includes:

  • interactive exercises
  • self-reflective exercises
  • multiple-choice tests.

During your studies, you will have the option to upgrade to the credit-bearing version of the course. If you choose to upgrade your course to credit-bearing, you can choose to be examined either by a 3,000-word essay or an exam.

If you choose to be assessed via exam, this is an exam that you must sit in person. Exams can be taken:

  • on campus at the University of Port Harcourt Business School (UPBS)

Sitting your exam on campus at the University of Port Harcourt Business School is free. Other universities, exam centres and British Council Offices may charge you for this service. This is an additional cost that you will have to pay on top of your course fee.

You’ll earn a Professional Development Certificate when you complete all four.

You can earn a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in Energy, Economics and Finance if you complete the credit-bearing version of all four courses, assessed by essay or exam. You’ll also earn 15 credits at Masters level (SCQF Level 11) this way. You can use these credits towards further study.

You can study the four courses in any order and enrol whenever it suits you. You have 18 months to complete each course and up to five years to complete the full programme.

Graduates from the MSc (Econ) Petroleum, Energy Economics and Finance have secured distinguished careers across the energy industry, with employers including BP, Petroleum Commission Ghana, Oil and Gas UK and Petrofac.


Our online Energy Economics and Finance courses prepare you for a successful career in the energy industry and beyond.

Am I ready?

This course has no formal entry requirements. You decide if it’s suitable for you.

The course is delivered at Masters level. At this level, you would usually have:

  • a 2:2 (second-class) degree or relevant experience.

The course relies on quantitative methods and you are expected to be numerate.

Your entry is at CPD (Continuous Professional Development) non-credit-bearing level. During your studies, you will have the option to upgrade to the credit-bearing version of the course.

IT requirements

You will need access to:

A computer (PC, laptop or Mac) operating on:

  • Windows 7 or later
  • Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) or later, preferably Mac OS 10.12 (Sierra)

All our teaching materials are smartphone- and tablet-friendly. However, you’re likely to need a proper laptop or computer keyboard for completing assignments comfortably.

Reliable internet access

With reasonable download speed. We broadly estimate at least 2Mbps so that you can take part fully in live sessions.

Speakers or headphones

  • A headset with built-in microphone and earphones is useful if you’re likely to study in an environment with background noise.
  • A webcam may be desirable for some interactive sessions.


We will give you access to Office365 applications. This means that you can use online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and install these programs on up to five personal devices.

If your course requires any specialist software, then we’ll provide you with copies of this and a licence that lasts throughout your studies.
